Sound Project Proposals

  1. British Countryside Inn

My first proposal is a soundscape for a British countryside Inn. The soundscape will begin with a car pulling up on a rainy evening, and the guest walking up and entering the Inn. We will follow along, checking into the room and then visiting the dining tavern. The soundscape will conclude with the guest retiring to their room, and perhaps a cliffhanger of haunting sounds.

I plan to use found sounds for the large old door and creaky wooden floors. I will create field sounds for the car room noises. I will also use human voices for the Inn caretaker and the dining room. The soundscape will be between 1.5 and 3 minutes long.

2. Snowy Mountainside Cabin

My second proposal is a soundscape of two people hiking through the snow and wind back to their isolated mountain cabin. Upon their return, they will take off their outside gear and cozy up by making a fire. Then they will do some cooking or make some hot tea and relax in the rocking chair by the fire.

I will use found sounds for the crunching snow and wind. I plan to create field sounds for the undressing as well as making tea and the fire noises. I will use human voices for the pair to communicate. The soundscape will be 1.5 to 3 minutes long.

Radio Call

This exercise was about taking the dialogue of a radio call and adding music and effects to it. It included layering multiple sounds, auto-matching sound levels, and ducking. It also included panning, clarifying audio, and adding other effects.

Repairing Audio

This exercise worked on repairing audio. We did this using a variety of techniques including reducing reverb, reducing noise, and removing pops and background noise. It is really amazing to see how easy it is to do these things and what an improvement it has on the sound piece.

Sound Project- Night at the INN

The intent of the project is to take the listener to an inn and convey the spookiness of their surroundings. Initially in the creative process the idea centred more around the quaintness of the Inn. The main character would spend time in the dining room and eventually retire to their room where the ending would be a spooky cliffhanger. As the project developed, I felt more dialogue would be needed in order to convey the dining experience. The initial draft contained more of the experience arriving to the Inn, but I decided to cut that and focus more from the arrival onward. I began layering rain and cawing crow sounds to give the ambiance of an eerie night. Creaking doors and floors express the presence of the old manor and ambient voices add the the depth of the surroundings. The presence of an other worldly being is expressed through ghostly noises and the main characters fright can be felt through gasps and breath. The concluding music gives the feeling that there is more to come.
